Abstract

The scattering peak of the elastic resonance of 3.045 MeV 4He with 16O shows a broadened half-width in Rutherford backscattering/channelling measurement for LiNbO 3, LiTaO 3, KTiOPO 4 (KTP) and Sr .61Ba .39Nb 2O 6 (SBN) crystals. The effect was explained as due to the difference of stopping power between the channelling and nonchannelling 4He ions. The ratio of the channelled stopping power to the random stopping power of 4He 2+ was deduced from the different half-width (FWHM) of channelled and random stopping power. The determined stopping power ratios are 78.6, 77.8, 75.7 and 73.0% for virgin LiNbO 3, LiTaO 3, KTP and SBN crystals, respectively.
