Abstract

A survey has been made of the influence of measuring technique on the measured surface dose received in an oblique irradiation technique. This influence has been found to be considerable. Measurements of the mean skin dose received in post-operative irradiation of the chest wall in carcinoma of the breast have been carried out on a phantom. This work has been extended to a series of 50 patients on treatment. Little evidence has been found for the influence of size of patients on this dose, although their shape is important. Measured doses were found on an average to be 15 per cent below those predicted from previous reports on the subject.
