Abstract

The misfit between UPSILON and UPSILON' in nickel-base superalloys may be measured by C.B.E.D. Conventional X-ray techniques have insufficient spatial resolution to measure local misfit values near to growing UPSILON' particles, where solute levels differ from ''equilibrium'' values. C.B.E.D., which measures lattice parameters in situ, does not measure the ''stress-free'' misfit which determines ..gamma..' coarsening behaviour, but does allow variations in lattice parameter due to fluctuations in solute content to be monitored. Absolute values of lattice parameter in f.c.c. metals may be measured by C.B.E.D., provided that a material of known lattice parameter is available for calibration purposes, and similar zone axes are compared.
