Abstract

Norton's and Therenin's theorems as applied to simple mechanical systems will be reviewed. Measurement techniques to determine blocked force, free vibration, and coupled intermediate impedance system response will be presented. The relative merits of these characterizations will be compared on the basis of ease of measurement and utility of application of results to predicting installed machinery vibration. Specific examples of source characteristics for mechanical equipment such as diesel engines, pumps, and compressors, fans, and hydraulic equipment will be presented.
