Abstract

A procedure for the semi-automatic analysis of large numbers of high energy gamma-ray spectra is described. The method of non-linear least squares is used and the relevant theory is derived with emphasis on the validity of the least squares error estimates in non-linear problems. The conditions under which the procedure works reliably are given. Experimental requirements imposed by these conditions are discussed and apparatus capable of meeting them is described briefly.
