Abstract

Summary This article is an attempt to sketch in broad outline the possible theological core of a synthesis of traditional theology and the contributions of the charismatic renewal. Apart from the exegesis of Scripture, this is mainly done with the help of psychological models provided by E. Becker and J.E. Loder. The fear of death is identified as the force behind the twin ontological motives of eros and agape. Only transference of this fear to an unlimited object can relieve the tension between these conflicting motives and open the way to authentic life. It is argued, that Spirit-baptism is an agapeic experience in which believers are invited to transfer their horror of death to the crucified and risen Christ. This eschatological experience enables them to die to their fear and its concomitant inauthentic (sinful) life and rise to become a heroic, liberating gift (charism) to others.
