Abstract

1. The method of the differential hysteresis loop has been used to demonstrate experimentally the existence of two maxima of magnetic susceptibilityxmax ↑↓ andxmax ↑→, due to displacements of the 90 ° and 180 ° boundaries in nickel, iron and permalloy specimens. 2. The interval between the maxima vanishes when there are external stresses as well as with plastic deformation of the specimen. 3. An increase inx in a polycrystalline specimen of nickel in low fields with σ ≤ σi has been confirmed by this method; it follows from this that double annealing does not remove the magnetic texture completely (the latter is obviously affected by the form of the specimen). 4. In the case of an annealed polycrystalline specimen of nickel it is possible in some cases to estimate the internal stresses in the specimen remaining after annealing from the maximum ofx′max with respect to σ.
