Abstract

From 1986 through the latter part of the 1990s, gastroenterology (GI) fellowship applicants and programs participated in the National Resident Matching Program/Subspecialty Matching Services (NRMP/SMS). Participation in the Match declined in the late 1990s and was formally dissolved for GI fellowship applicants and programs in 1999. The ensuing 7 years brought unheralded chaos to our subspecialty application process. The interviewing schedule gradually moved earlier and earlier in the PGY-2 year as fellowship programs tried to outmaneuver each other in what amounted to a free market competition for what was perceived to be a limited supply of qualified applicants.
