Abstract

The electron-impact mass spectra of a series of specifically deuterated n -octadecyl benzoates define the positions from which hydrogen atom migration occurs in the reaction paths leading to C 18H 36 ⨥ and C 7H 7O 2. The migration step in the path leading to C 18H 36 ⨥ and the first of the two migration steps in that leading to C 7H 7O 2 appear to be one and the same, occurring from carbons 1 to 7, with the maximum contribution from C-3. The second migration step in the path leading to C 7H 7O 2 + appears to occur nonselectively from all positions in the octadecyl group.
