Abstract
The suggestion is made that the Martian canals are chains of desert sand dunes. The necessary physical conditions for dune formation are reviewed; these conditions probably exist on Mars. Sand driving winds are a factor of 7 higher and so Martian dune chains should be longer than on the Earth.
