Abstract

This chapter discusses the recruitment and training process involved in a sailing career and provides details of wage categories and qualification requirements. It considers the presence of shipboard hierarchies and the high turnover of labour in assessing the difficulties of valuing individual abilities properly. The chapter also focuses on the integration of maritime and landward labour markets at a local level and compares the transformation of the maritime labour systems to the period of industrialisation in the landward society.
