Abstract

The article is a reply to criticism from P. Bobko concerning the author's views on the widespread application of human motivation theory in industry. The author rejects Bobko's suggestion that the marginal or relative utility approach has merit because he thinks that it is not operational and adds nothing to the validity criteria for evaluating the application of motivation theories. Valence-Instrumentality-Expectancy (VIE) theory, the sociology of science and technology, and the Cronbach/Gleser prediction model are mentioned.
