Abstract

This paper offers a critical analysis of the 2014 South Australian State Election. The paper will focus on the campaign, the election results for both houses, key the policy differences and the question of electoral boundary ‘unfairness’. The paper considers the campaign capacity of Liberal and Labor and finds that, once again, Labor managed to coordinate the leader’s campaign with the battlefield marginal seat campaign in superior manner compared with the Liberal campaign. The paper focuses on the ideas, individuals and institutional factors which shaped the result. Unlike the previous state election, there were clear ideological differences between the main parties, and a contested debate took place about the role and capacity of the new government to deal with the future challenges facing South Australia.
