Abstract

Abstract Wuthering Heights is firmly established as one of the great novels of all time, but critical and popular reaction to it has changed dramatically in the 150 years since its publication. Dr Thompson reviews the history of its reception from Charlotte Bronte's own reaction to her sister's work, to modern film and television adaptations. The attitude to Heathcliff, the gender issue, the novel's multiple narratives and its open-ended qualities, are some of the issues that make Wuthering Heights such a powerful enigma. This article was first delivered as an invited talk at the Bronte Parsonage Museum in July 1997 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Wuthering Heights.
