Abstract

This article contains a review of the many types of collaboration in scientific research, a brief summary of the history of collaboration from 1800 to 2000, remarks on whether collaboration increases productivity, quality, and impact of research, reasons why researchers collaborate, with consideration of some negative aspects, and a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of research group structure.
