Abstract
Little work has been done in an attempt to understand the dynamic quality of political structures in western Liberia. This paper documents the lives of three political leaders and demonstrates how their accession to power was based on the manipulation of the traditional political strcture in a way that made use of old categories of power in a new way. Once this process is understood, it is possible to view other individual's attempts at gaining power.
