Abstract
The principal manganese spring deposits in the Turtle Mountains of North Dakota were investigated and mapped in detail. One of these, Mineral Spring, located in the N 1/2 NE 1/4 Section 22, T. 162 N., R. 73 W., was found to contain approximately 16,000 tons of manganese ore in the form of the mineral rancieite in calcareous tufa with an average manganese content of about 10 per cent. The source of the manganese appears to be in manganiferous limonitic concretions in the Fort Union formation which underlies the glacial drift in the Turtle Mountains.
