Abstract

A group of 14 patients with postoperative mediastinal infection treated by continuous closed irrigation with dilute povidone-iodine solution is presented. Satisfactory eradication of the mediastinal infection was achieved in all patients treated, although two patients died of other causes prior to hospital discharge. The patients were evenly divided between the pediatric and adult age groups. The application of continuous closed irrigation in the treatment of mediastinal infection following cardiac surgery is described. This report suggests that the use of povidone-iodine in the irrigation system is effective in both adults and children and may avoid certain problems seen with the use of other agents.
