Abstract

Disposal of long-lived radioactive waste is often publicized as one of the great unresolved problems of the industrial era. Within the waste management community there is a consensus, however, that safe disposal is perfectly feasible with current technology. This paper reviews concepts for the disposal of such waste with emphasis on using observations from natural systems to justify the applicability of the performance assessment methodology used to demonstrate safety over very long time periods.
