Abstract

Penile prosthesis implantation is associated with a relatively low rate of wound infection (3%). The most common organism in most reported series isS. epidermidis, followed by the gram-negative coliforms. Strict adherence to antiseptic principles, together with the use of prophylactic antiseptic principles, together with the use of prophylactic antibiotics, keeps the incidence of infection low. If an infection occurs, either the prosthesis should be promptly removed or a salvage or rescue procedure should be considered by which the device is removed, the wound cleansed, and a new prosthesis inserted.
