Abstract

Invasive electrophysiological studies have made a considerable impact on the management of arrhythmias in adults [l]. Initially it was hoped that these studies would provide clinically useful information in patients with bradycardias caused by sinuatrial disease or atrioventricular block. For the various reasons discussed at length in the literature, however, these applications of electrophysiological techniques have limited utility [2]. Thus, the major thrust of clinical cardiac electrophysiology in adults has been in the management of tachycardias [l]. The factors contributing to the generation of arrhythmias in children may be different from those in adults. Not surprisingly, therefore, the indications for electrophysiological studies in children are also different although their aims are similar that is to clarify diagnosis and establish effective treatment. How then has the technique contributed to the management of arrhythmias in children?
