IN CONJUNCTION WITH ITS MAJOR RETROSPECTIVE OF THE CAREER OF Singer Sargent (1856-1925), the National Gallery of Art postered the city of Washington, inviting viewers to consider John Singer Sargent: The Man Who Illuminated the Gilded Age. Large crowds responded to the invitation, gathering to view one of the largest-and certainly the most thorough-Sargent show ever assembled.
