Abstract

This chapter addresses the argument that there is one function of the “symbolic universe” that is found within Johannine literature. This function is shown to be making sense of all of the features of Johannine history. The discussion reveals that there is a possibility of a continuing dialectic between the symbolic world and the historical experience of the Johannine members; these in turn functioned as an explanation of that historical experience and a motivator and shaper of the reaction of the Johannine group members to the experience. This chapter also looks at the purpose of the “ascent and descent” motif within the literary structure of the Fourth Gospel and a compares it in the Johannine community structure and relationships of the group to the environment.
