Abstract

The Malagasy Folk-Lore Society was founded in 1876 in Madagascar and counts as the first Folk-Lore Society to be so named. The holdings of SOAS University of London allow its history to be documented for the first time. Along with the South African Folk-Lore Society (1879), it was one established in the Global South. The Malagasy Folk-Lore Society and The Folk-Lore Society in London were to become linked through the figure of the Rev. James Sibree.
