Abstract

The Dillen is a kaleidoscope of scenes, stories and songs from the lower depths of Stratford-upon-Avon. The words are those of a born story teller, George Hewins, taken down when he was in his 90's. Cumulatively, they give us unforgeltablepictures of class relations in Middle England, of love and war, poverty and cunning. A narrative has been brilliantly constructed by Angela Hewins, who married George's grandson, to make a book which is quite distinct in the gathering heritage of 'oral history'. History Workshop is delighted tofind that Angela Hewins has been a subscriber to this Journalfrom the beginning, and to print this brief account of her work. But readers who would like to savour it should buy the book for themselves. It is published by Elm Tree Books at ?8.95 and 0. U.P. (Paperback) at f2. 95.
