Abstract
RATIONALE: Crystal structure of Der p 2, a major allergen from Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, has previously been reported to have an unidentified hydrophobic ligand. Another molecule, NPC2 (Niemann-Pick disease type C2 protein), which is structurally similar to Der p 2, has been shown to bind cholesterols. Due to their high structural similarities, we hypothesize that Der p 2 may be a lipid binding molecule.
