Abstract

The dynamics of butterfly phenology in the Northern Tien Shan (the Kirghiz Range) was studied. The phenological structure of the fauna in each altitude belt is described. In all the belts except the subnival one, the earliest flying species were polyzonal. The number of seasonal butterfly assemblages was the greatest in the subalpine belt and the smallest in the subnival one. The number of seasonal assemblages increased or decreased by one from one belt to the next, whereas the fraction of characteristic species in the summer assemblages increased. The summer assemblages were the richest in characteristic species, whereas the first and last assemblages were the poorest.
