Abstract

Background: Histoplasmosis is a fungal infection caused by Histoplasma Capsularum, often found in patients with depression of cellular immunity. The clinical state of such patients can vary, ranging from an asymptomatic to a complicated state, with several clinical manifestations. The recognition of the main symptoms presented is of fundamental importance for the early detection of the disease and the management of the patients. The objective of this study was to analyze, in Salvador, the main clinical manifestations presented in patients with histoplasmosis. Methods & Materials: A cross-sectional, retrospective and analytical study was carried out with analysis of secondary data from the medical records of 27 patients diagnosed with histoplasmosis who were admitted to the Couto Maia Hospital (HCM) in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, during the period from 2012 to 2014. The possible clinical manifestations in several individuals were analyzed, and the histoplasmosis diagnosis was confirmed through visualization of the fungus by direct research, histopathological evidence at any site, isolation of the fungus in culture medium and/or tests of specific serological reactions. Results: In a sample of 27 patients diagnosed with histoplasmosis, 12 (44.4%) presented fever, 7 (25.9%) presented hepatomegaly, 6 (22.2%) presented diarrhea, 6 (22.2%) presented headache, 5 (18.5%) presented hypochromia, 5 (18.5%) presented asthenia, 4 (14.8%) presented dyspnea, 4 (14.8%) presented neurological symptoms, 4 (14.8%) presented dry cough, 3 (11.1%) presented myalgia or arthralgia, 2 (7.4%) presented abdominal pain, 2 (7.4%) presented jaundice, 1 (3,7%) presented productive cough, 1 (3,7) presented convulsion, and none presented sweating or pleuritic pain. Conclusion: Data analysis shows that possibly, the most frequent clinical manifestations in patients diagnosed with histoplasmosis in Salvador are fever, hepatomegaly, headache and hypochromia.
