Abstract

In this research, the magnetocaloric effects in amorphous Fe/sub 90-x/Mn/sub x/Zr/sub 10/ alloys are studied. X-ray diffraction of the samples confirm the amorphous nature of the samples. The composition of the samples are verified through energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX). The behavior of magnetization, which relate thermodynamic quantities near ferromagnetic(FM)-paramagnetic(PM) phase transition, has been performed in order to understand the nature of the magnetic phase transition at the near of Curie temperature and type of magnetic ordering. The magnetic entropy change for isothermal magnetization is calculated by applying the thermodynamic Maxwell equation to a magnetic system. As Mn content is increased, the Curie temperature is decreased and the maximum entropy change (/spl Delta/S/sub M/) is seen about the Curie temperature in all samples. Results show that the FeMnZr alloys have a good magnetocaloric effect, indicating that they can be considered as candidates for magnetic refrigeration applications.
