Abstract

The magnetic moment of Co atoms on the surface of fine cobalt particles has been calculated using the continued fraction method. The magnetic moment of Co atoms on a {111} FCC surface is found to be 1.84 μ B and on {0001}, HCP surface 1.82 μ B. The energy of the electrons has been calculated for the (111) and (1 1 0) surfaces for the FCC structure and for the (0001) and (01 1 0) surfaces for the HCP structure. The critical diameter below which fine particles at low temperatures are stable in the FCC high temperature structure has been estimated.
