Abstract An attempt is made to detect Zeeman splitting in five high resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra of a magnetically sensitive line in Xi Bootis A, through a comparison of this line with a magnetically insensitive one. No convincing evidence for the existence of magnetic fields on Xi Boo A results, in contrast to the previous detection by means of a similar technique of 2650 gauss, 20-45% surface area fields. The possibility of a variable magnetic field on Xi Boo A is supported by measurements of chromospheric and coronal diagnostics, all of which fluctuate with time. A comparison between active regions of Xi Boo A and those of the sun is drawn, indicating the possibility of significant differences between the two.
