A Reduced Role of the Magnetic Field in Dense Core Regions Heyer, Mark H. Abstract The morphology and kinematics of the dense core regions within the Taurus Molecular Cloud complex are examined from enhanced (C-13)O J = 1-0 emission and are compared with the local direction of the interstellar magnetic field determined from earlier polarization measurements. The core orientations and rotational axes are not systematically aligned with the local magnetic field direction. Rather, the distribution of rotational axes is uniform. Such nonalignment may reflect the inability of the magnetic field to exert a significant stress upon the mostly neutral material at the densities which characterize cloud cores. The existence of significant angular momentum at these moderately high densities and the uniformly distributed axes may imply that the angular momentum problem is not completely resolved by magnetic braking but rather by other processes such as fragmentation of the collapsing core or stellar wind activity. The observed random distribution of core rotational axes may be due to core-core interactions. Thus, these dense core regions may have lifetimes comparable to the core-core collision time scale of 4 million yr.
