Abstract

This paper describes in some detail the inner workings of the Lyon–Fedder–Mobarry (LFM) global magnetospheric simulation code. The code was designed with a number of criteria in mind: to use the best possible transport algorithms which maintained ∇ · B ⇒ = 0 to roundoff, the use of an adapted grid to put resolution where needed, the use of special techniques in high magnetic field regions, and an integrated ionospheric model. We discuss the actual code used to meet those criteria with at the level of giving a rough blueprint of how to build a similar simulation model.
