Abstract

This small volume is second edition published to become now, the first of series entitled Major Problems in Clinical Pediatrics . The volume has been brought up to date and this reviewer agrees with the foreward by Alexander Schaffer that the rewriting has made a valuable little book invaluable, at least in my opinion, to serious students of pediatrics. The content is limited to what the title indicates, The Function of the Lung in Newborn Infants , though obviously data regarding the functions of other organs, particularly the heart and circulation, have been included. An adequate review of embryology for the purpose of the book appears logically at the beginning. The rest of the volume might well be entitled Pulmonary Physiology of the Neonate. The extent of our ignorance is repeatedly emphasized, as it should be, and we hope that Mary Ellen Avery will soon need to make still another
