Abstract
Synopsis The specific heat of polycrystalline MnBr2.4H2O has been measured from 1 to 4.5°K and from 11 to 20°K. A well defined λ-type specific heat anomaly associated with an antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition has been observed, the Neel point being 2.136°K. The behaviour of the specific heat curve indicates the persistence of short-range order above the transition point. The net entropy change associated with the process has been found to be about 14.9 joules mole−1 deg−1, one-fifth of it being gained above the Neel point.
