Abstract

The Evangeline story, as made famous by Longfellow, is one of two star-crossed lovers who are separated at the moment of the Acadian Expulsion. The engagement of "fairest of all maids," Evangeline, and "noblest of all youths," Gabriel, becomes the central focus of Longfellow's pastoral description of pre-expulsion Grand Pré, Novia Scotia. This myth is the predominant one that is eventually perpetuated regarding the Acadian expulsion into the Southern States.
