Abstract

Chapter 2 examines the power dynamics in higher education and the concentration of power in the hands of more senior white males. It then discusses the ways in which status-based positional power can result in ageist pressures and influence differential decision-making based on generational status and age. The chapter describes the intensification of ageism due to multiple jeopardies arising from the intersectionality of subordinate group memberships and shares specific examples from the in-depth interviews conducted for the study. It highlights prominent age discrimination lawsuits in higher education and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA).
