Abstract

Current technical opinion paper aims to assess a holistic perspective of the potential lifespan of water-cooled large-scale nuclear reactors, which have maintained a consistent and reliable contribution to the global energy mix over several decades. By examining various factors such as Technological Advancements, Safety Measures, Regulatory Frameworks, Environmental Concerns, Economic Viability, Public Perception and Acceptance, and Future Prospects and Challenges, the current study will provide a comprehensive analysis of the sustainability and longevity of these reactors. Ultimately, this study will shed light on the future of water-cooled large-scale nuclear reactors and their role in meeting the world's growing energy demands. This assessment reveals that while challenges exist, there are clear pathways to ensure their continued operation and contribution to global energy needs. By investing in advanced technologies, fostering regulatory collaboration, embracing integration with renewables, focusing on economic competitiveness, and prioritizing public engagement and education, we can pave the way for a future where water-cooled reactors play a central role in a low-carbon energy landscape.
