Abstract

The logical foundations of invariance principles in physics are discussed with the aim of clarifying the physical meaning of the main concepts and operations involved. Care is taken to avoid the use of coordinate systems, which are likely to lead to misunderstandings in the most critical points. The group character of the reference changes is studied, and its relation with the assumption of a postulate of equivalence is shown. The physical consequences of the conclusions of this work for the most usual laws of invariance will be discussed in a subsequent paper.
