Abstract

TEMPO-PC is a nitroxide spin-labeled lipid in which the 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl piperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) group is covalently attached to the choline head group of phosphatidylcholine (PC). TEMPO-PC has been utilized to interpret the dynamics of water molecules near membrane surfaces in electron resonance spectroscopy as well as to assess the penetration depth of water molecules through the membranes. Because of an amphiphilic character of TEMPO moiety, and the flexibility of lipid molecules, the depth distribution of TEMPO moiety is potentially affected by the lipid type and the phase of bilayer membranes.
