Abstract

The global reach of digital technologies (ICTs) centred around the Internet is enabling individuals to network with information and people anywhere in the world. The worldwide span of this network of networks generates the risk of undermining local ‘real’ community relationships. However, this paper summarizes evidence showing that emerging information and communication technologies (ICTs), such as online social networking, are also being widely used to enable new forms of interaction that can build stronger social relationships, locally and globally. The main practical and policy challenges to fostering an appropriate balance between local and global outcomes of such new media are highlighted.
