Abstract

Up to now, the load ratings of spherical plain bearings have been calculated using a nominal contact pressure and a projected bearing surface area. This type of method does not show real capacity of the bearings. In this paper, the steel-steel spherical plain bearings under load were studied by the finite element method. The contact stress distribution in the bearing was determined. A relationship between maximum contact pressure and deformation was found. Based on these results, new definitions for the bearing load ratings are recommended, and general formulae to calculate the ratings are determined.
