Abstract

Objective We described one case of successful living-related intestine transplant between identical twins. Method The recipient was a 45 year-old female with short gut syndrome secondary to superior mesenteric artery thrombosis. Monozygosity was established by buccal smear DNA PCR amplification using short tandem repeat. The recipient, who was transplanted with 155 cm of the donor distal ileum, had an uneventful postoperative course and was discharged on a regular diet 12 days after surgery. Result Posttransplantively, she received a brief course of steroids without maintenance immunosuppression. At 12-month follow-up, both donor and recipient were well without complications. Conclusion Living-related intestinal transplant between identical twins can be a valid therapeutic option forthe management of short gut syndrome.
