Abstract

ABSTRACT Live at the Village Vanguard is not only the name of many jazz recordings; it is also the title of Max Gordon’s autobiographical memoir. Max Gordon founded the Village Vanguard, a nightclub he managed until his death in 1989. His autobiography provides insight into how the world of nightclubs and jazz is defined. In this article I analyze Gordon's Live at the Village Vanguard to study how space, musicians, and audiences are represented in his memoir.
