Abstract

This paper deals with the condition and the historical role of the literary education, taking its cue from the contradictions of the humanities in the present state. Moving backward from the present to a not so remote past, i.e. the situation of italian culture during the Fascism and the Second World War, with particular reference to authors such as Primo Levi, Luigi Meneghello and Beppe Fenoglio, it points out some shadows and ideological ambiguities in the tradition of humanities that we should consider in any problematic reflection about the aims and methods of the literary education. Lastly, the paper comes back to the present and poses some critical remarks about the “posthistorical university” (Bill Readings), with some possible advices to survive in these “ruins”.
