Abstract

Crystals of the 1:3 adduct of iodoform and sulphur (CHI 3·3 S 8) have been found to exhibit a strong electro-optic effect. The values of the linear Pockels effect coefficients determined by using a modulation technique are: ∣ r 12∣ = (4.4 ± 2.4) × 10 −12 m/V and ∣ r 13 − 0.5 i 2 r 33 ∣ = (0.29 ± 0.12) × 10 −12 m/V. A comparison of the electro-optic susceptibility derived from these data with that deduced from powder second-harmonic generation tests shows the electro-optic phenomenon to be mainly of electronic origin.
