Abstract

By consideration of the steady-state solutions of the density matrix equations for a two-level system including the effects of spatial degeneracy, an expression is derived for the line shape of a microwave transition under conditions of partial saturation. Expressions valid for Δj=0 as well as Δj=±1 transitions are given. The line shape expression, which is a continued fraction, is shown to depend upon a large number of relaxation coefficients. However, it is shown by numerical tests that the dependence on T1 and T2 is roughly an order of magnitude stronger than the dependence on higher order relaxation parameters. The validity of the usual procedure of fitting a power-broadened microwave spectral line to a sum of power-broadened m components is discussed.
