Abstract

(Obstet Gynecol. 2023;142(3):725–726) The conversation surrounding the “viability” of a pregnancy or fetus is fraught with disagreement in political, legal, religious, philosophical, and scientific settings. Ambiguity in the use of the term has contributed significantly to confusion and misinformation, especially when it is appropriated in a nonmedical context. This article presents a perspective on the term viability, its definition and usage, and how confusion and misinformation surrounding it should be addressed. The focus of this perspective is the use of terminology, not personal opinions, at the beginning of life.
