Abstract

In this article the author discusses how the laws of physics may prevent the human brain from evolving into a more powerful thinking machine. According to the author, research suggests that human intelligence may be close to its evolutionary limit. Topics include the constraints that physics places on the mental faculties of the human brain, such as the laws of thermodynamics, the connection between brain size and intelligence, and how human beings may still be able to achieve higher intelligence collectively through writing and the use of the Internet, which enables individuals to expand their minds outside the confines of their bodies. INSETS: Brain-Size Outliers; The Physics of Thought; Why We Probably Cannot Get Much Smarter.
