Abstract

Joan Brandon has been a lecturer in social work at Newcastle and Manchester Universities, and is the author of previous papers on medical social work and adoption. From 1976 to 1978 she was a CCETSW Research Fellow at the University of East Anglia, during which time she carried out the fieldwork upon which this paper is based. She worked on the data until a fortnight before her death after a long illness in January 1979. Joan Brandon devoted her working life to the pursuit of excellence in social work, and this account of her last commission is a fitting memorial to all that she stood for.
